How to grow your customer base overseas: The Clearpay checklist

In a digital-first world, businesses have more opportunity than ever to grow into new markets and expand beyond their borders.

However, sometimes the simplest things can be the biggest challenge – payments for example. How do you accept payments from other currencies? How do you convert them? How does it all work when it comes to tax time?

To make things simple, Clearpay offers Cross Border Trade, which enables eligible merchants to access global markets, including Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States. This means you can now put your brand in front of millions of Clearpay customers overseas who are ready to love – and shop – your products.

What is Cross Border Trade?

Cross Border Trade allows eligible merchants to trade online with Clearpay shoppers in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the States.

Clearpay is the UK part of the Afterpay global family - and Clearpay’s Cross Border Trade programme allows you to reach shoppers using both Clearpay and Afterpay.

How does Cross Border Trade work for your customers?

  1. A Clearpay/ Afterpay customer shops your product and checks out with their Clearpay/ Afterpay account.
  2. The customer sees a clear breakdown of the product payment plan in their local currency.
  3. The customer pays for your product with their Afterpay or Clearpay account and checks out in their local currency.
  4. Clearpay pays your business the full amount of the purchase minus the merchant fee in your local currency.

Why enable Cross Border Trade?

Afterpay’s Cross Border Trade makes selling internationally so much easier, and offers access to a range of business benefits including:

  • Increased business growth potential from reaching new customers in new markets
  • Access to international customers who are shopping across borders
  • International trade made easy: all the customers with none of the stress

Tell international customers you offer Clearpay/ Afterpay

Once you’re set up and ready, get the full benefits of selling overseas by letting Clearpay/Afterpay customers know you’re there. There are three key ways you can shout this from the rooftops!

1. On your website. Don’t forget to include the Cross Border Trade banner on your website so Afterpay /Clearpay customers know they can shop from overseas. Banners can be used on the home page and on the checkout page.

2. On your socials. Promote your business in international markets across social channels. We’ve provided you with some handy social assets here, but consider other ways to get your brand out. Utilise hashtags that are trending in your desired country, for example, run some sponsored posts for that market, or post some country-specific messaging to reach customers wherever they are.

3. In your emails. If you’re already building a base of overseas customers in your database, be sure to let them know you’re now shipping to their destination. If you’re already offering Cross Border Trade, and are now adding the US to your shipping list, look at your existing database and how you can target new US customers – what about a Refer a Friend’ program?

Whatever your approach, Clearpay’s Cross Border Trade can help you grow and reach more customers than ever before. Need help? The Clearpay team is available to help you complete your cross-border checklist. Reach out to the team.
