When Jeanette Misseldine and her husband launched No. 1 Bra London they wanted to redesign the bra - and make it better fitting and more comfortable.

After 30 years of designing lingerie for some of the world’s biggest brands, there’s little that Jeanette Misseldine doesn’t know about bras – or women’s bodies.&nbsp;And having spent hours fitting and measuring women, Misseldine knew that there was one issue that women struggled with most when it came to bras: the underwire.“Over the years, women’s bodies have changed – they’ve got bigger, curvier and fuller. But the underwire hasn’t changed,” says Misseldine, explaining that the horseshoe shape of the typical underwire often cuts into women’s breast tissue.

So, in November 2020, Misseldine and her husband, Dale, launched <a href="https://no1bra.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">No.1 Bra London</a>, a lingerie brand aimed at offering a better-fitting, more comfortable bra.The brand quickly sold out of some of its most popular styles, and has since sold thousands of bras. This month No. 1 Bra London also features in Clearpay’s ‘Make It Your Way’ campaign, celebrating small business owners who are carving their own path and achieving success in a fresh and original way.

<h2>Make it comfortable</h2>Misseldine started out in the lingerie industry when she was just 18, working for British lingerie queen Janet Reger, before going on to design for some of the world’s biggest brands, including Marks &amp; Spencer.In that time, Misseldine has seen women “with bruise marks, sores and cuts” from the tip of the underwire, she says.

When she and her husband, who has also worked in the lingerie industry for decades, decided to launch their own business, they were determined to do things differently. “We wanted to solve a problem,” says Misseldine, who eventually came up with the design for an underwire that curved away from the body and proved to be more comfortable. “We also added a panel along the top which acts as a support for that [back] area.”<h2>Make it fit</h2>The pair sought patents for their designs before launching No1. Bra London in 2020 – and were thrilled with the response. “We had no idea we would sell out within three months… and the reviews have been incredible.

Misseldine admits that launching a business has been a steep learning curve. Early on, she realised that many women didn’t know their exact bra size – and to combat return rates, the brand began offering 10-minute fitting phone calls to help women identify the best-fitting size.<h2>Make it customer-first</h2>This customer-first approach is important to Misseldine, who chose to partner with Clearpay as a way to make her products more accessible to women.&nbsp;

“Clearpay gives women the opportunity to spread the cost, so they can afford a good bra for themselves and also spend money on their families.”<h2>Make it fulfilling</h2>She admits that launching a business has involved plenty of late nights and long hours – and that work-life balance remains a distant possibility. “Dale and I will be cooking dinner and we’ll be talking about bra elastic!”&nbsp;However, Misseldine says that the challenges of running a business are worth it.“The biggest driver for me is getting bras on women and seeing the emotional change [that comes over them]. They look taller, they look slimmer. When I see these ladies wearing our bras, I have a huge feeling of achievement.”

Luxury accessories brand Jem + Bea has found new customers through Clearpay.

It was after spotting the Clearpay logo on other retailers’ websites that the co-founders of <a href="https://jemandbea.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Jem + Bea</a>, which offers luxury baby accessories, decided to investigate.Impressed by Clearpay’s offering, which allows customers to spread their payments over time, the brand - which is stocked in John Lewis and in boutiques around the world - decided to install it.

When Dominique Hughes and Rebecca Da Silva Lima became mothers, they were dismayed by the products on offer. So they decided to create products themselves.

Style matters – and never more so than in the sleep-deprived months of early parenthood, say Dominique Hughes and Rebecca Da Silva Lima.&nbsp;“You really need to feel good about yourself because you’re so tired… you need something to lift your spirits,” says Hughes.That’s why the pair launched multi-award-winning accessories brand <a href="https://jemandbea.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="background-color: transparent; color: rgb(0, 0, 0);">Jem + Bea</a>. At the time, in 2015, Da Silva Lima had just given birth to her first child, while Hughes had just had her third.

Back then, the pair were dismayed by the baby accessories on offer. “There were all these really ugly printed bags. Everything had cupcakes and flowers on them,” remembers Hughes. “It was almost as though, with motherhood, you were expected to close the door to your stylish life and open another door where you’d completely lost your style.”

Seven years and two additional children later (the duo has five between them), Jem + Bea is a hugely successful luxury brand, stocked in dozens of shops and department stores around the world, including John Lewis.The business also features in Clearpay’s Make It Your Way series, which celebrates small business owners who are carving their own path and setting their own terms for success.

<h2>Make it your way&nbsp;</h2>Early on, Hughes says the pair had little choice but to forge their own path. Although Da Silva Lima had worked for several high-end fashion brands, including Anya Hindmarch and Mulberry, running a business was new to them both.“We’ve really learned on the job – in all aspects of the business. We’ve done everything our way because we’ve kind of made it up!”<h2>Make it parent-friendly</h2>They are upfront about the fact that running a business while raising five children has been challenging at times. “You’re spinning a lot of plates,” admits Hughes.But they discovered their own rhythm. “Becky is an early bird, so she would often get up and do stuff early in the morning,” says Hughes.&nbsp;“And then I would be working late at night when the kids were in bed.”

“That’s the beauty of our business,” adds Da Silva Lima. “We’re very female-oriented and [geared] around parenthood .I brought my youngest, Margot, with us to trade fairs [and to] meetings. I’ve breastfed her in meetings - and once on stage in front of about 200 people.”&nbsp;<h2>Make it stylish</h2>The brand’s big break came at a trade fair when a representative from John Lewis spotted their chic and minimalist range.&nbsp;

“We’re definitely fashion-led,” says Da Silva Lima of the brand’s distinctive aesthetic. “We’re not just looking to the maternity industry for inspiration – we are looking at high fashion, too.”Sustainability is another key priority. “We have a big recycled nylon range… and sustainability is something that’s hugely important to the younger generation of mums.”<h2>Make it practical&nbsp;</h2>But the success of the business isn’t just down to the brand’s aesthetics. Jem + Bea bags are as multi-tasking as the mothers who carry them. “The design of our bags is drawn from our own experience as mothers. [There’s] lots of internal organisation – so places for nappies and wipes and bottles,” says Hughes.

The bags are also known for their durability. “We’ve had customers say ‘We’ve had this bag for five or six years, and it’s still going strong.”<h2>Make it customer-centric</h2>From the beginning, the pair have always listened closely to customer feedback and responded – whether that means launching sustainable ranges or partnering with Clearpay. “We could see the popularity of Clearpay growing, and we wanted to give our customers an alternative option for purchasing [the bags],” says Hughes.“We knew it would be a popular choice, but we were pleasantly surprised,” she says, adding that sales began as soon as they launched with Clearpay.“[At Jem + Bea] we describe ourselves as ‘accessible luxury’. We have various price points and we want to be accessible to [everyone] [and] Clearpay helps with that.”

Amarante London founder Kiran Seehra on the impact that Clearpay has had on her business.

It’s been just over a year since <a href="https://www.amarantelondon.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Amarante London</a> founder Kiran Seehra enabled Clearpay for her preserved flower business - and since then Clearpay has driven tens of thousands of referrals and increased the average order value by 160 per cent.“Clearpay has become extremely important for our business,” says Seehra, who notes that Clearpay’s shop director drove 17,000 referrals to her website in February 2020 alone.

Shopping with services like Clearpay is the norm for Millennial and Gen Z now.

She says that Clearpay is especially important for brands looking to reach young audiences. “Around 80 per cent of our customer base is between 18 and 30 … [and] I think that shopping with buy now pay later services like Clearpay is the norm for Millennial and Gen Z now.”Seehra adds that she has appreciated the personal approach from Clearpay’s team. “I don’t think I could do business without [Clearpay and] [our Clearpay account manager] Lara. I’m on the phone to her every week. Quite often you’ll [come across] brands that will only work with you if you’re [a really big business]. What’s really nice about Lara, and I think Clearpay in general, is that [there is a focus on] small business.”

Kiran Seehra explains how her business found an innovative solution to the florist industry’s environmental challenges.

In the midst of ongoing lockdowns in 2021, Kiran Seehra found hope and inspiration in her customers’ stories.As the founder of preserved flower business <a href="https://www.amarantelondon.com/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank" style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); background-color: transparent;">Amarante London</a>, she is privy to some of her customers’ happiest moments – from birthdays to anniversaries, new babies to engagements – and during COVID-19 these everyday celebrations were a reprieve from the gloom of lockdowns.“I loved seeing all the wonderful messages that people send, especially during COVID-19 when things were really difficult for everyone. People couldn’t travel but they could still send flowers. It’s a really lovely business to be in."<h2>Make it sustainable</h2>A former financial analyst – and long-time lover of flowers - Seehra launched Amarante in 2019. She came up with the idea after learning about the damaging environmental effects of fresh flowers.

“Fresh flowers are intensively farmed, [often] in less developed parts of the world, where farmers, unfortunately, are still exploited. And then they tend to be flown around the world a few times [by plane] from wholesaler to wholesaler to retailer… so they come with huge carbon emissions.Her solution? To work with a B-Corp-certified farmer in Ecuador, who supplies roses which are then preserved. “Because we go direct to the farm, we avoid the huge carbon emissions."

Seehra founded Amarante three years ago – and since then the brand has grown to a seven-figure business with dozens of staff.She and Amarante feature in Clearpay’s Make It Your Way series, which celebrates small business owners who are creating businesses of the future, and carving their own path to success.

They have been my source of knowledge on everything!”In the early days, she says her biggest challenge was finding enough hours in the day! “I was basically working around the clock. I was the customer support [person] and the marketing manager and the operations [manager] – and I was having to do all these things I’d never done before.”<h2>Make it customer first</h2>Seehra credits much of her success to Amarante London’s focus on customer service. The business has excellent TrustPilot and Google Reviews, and offers fast, same-day delivery.

Seehra and her team also take a personal approach to customer experience.“With every order that we place, I still send an email to the customer saying thank you.
